christopher reid - winemaker + viticulturist
christopher reid wines is a martinborough based vineyard focused on pinot noir and chardonnay. We own and manage 2.2ha of vines spread across 4 vineyard sites with the aim of producing elegant and site expressive wines.
my journey into wine started at a young age when my parents purchased a small vineyard in martinborough. after looking after the vineyard for a few years I knew that this is was the industry I wanted to work in. so, after high school i went on to study viticulture and wine science.
after completing my degree i worked as a travelling winemaker in nelson (neudorf), oregon (amity), burgundy (patrice rion) and ata rangi in martinborough where i became assistant winemaker. this is where christopher reid wines started, producing a small volume each year.
in 2019 and 2020 my brother and i purchased 3 new vineyard sites (two in martinborough and one in te muna). this has given me a wide range of soil types and micro-climates to create the elegant and perfumed wines i aim to produce.
in 2024 we built a winery on our todds road vineyard giving us complete control of our winemaking and viticulture.
in terms of winemaking and viticulture i am not driven by a fixed ideology, but by what makes the most compelling wine with a minimal environmental impact.
